What is Sunswap Endurance and how is it different from traditional transport refrigeration units?

Sunswap Endurance is a fully electric transport refrigeration unit (TRU) powered by integrated batteries and solar panels fixed on top of the trailer. Unlike diesel-powered TRUs, Endurance produces zero direct emissions and reduces operating costs by up to 90%, while providing reliable, efficient performance.

How does Sunswap Endurance work?

Endurance performs like a traditional transport refrigeration unit, but is powered by an electric motor instead of a diesel engine. The unit is charged by plugging it in, just like an electric vehicle, and is supplemented by onboard solar panels for extended range and efficiency. Endurance was designed to match and exceed the current experience of transport refrigeration so it could fit seamlessly into your fleet.

What types of vehicles can Sunswap Endurance be used on?

Endurance is designed for use on semi-trailers and double-decker trailers (articulated lorries). It is not currently suitable for rigid trucks or vans.

How do I know if Sunswap Endurance can handle my specific delivery routes?

We use our proprietary Sunswap Analytics software to accurately determine the specifications you would need, based on factors like route distance, temperature requirements, ambient temperatures, and door openings. In almost all cases, Endurance can meet or exceed the performance of diesel transport refrigeration units.

We have also run over 20 trials with leading operators, retailers and manufacturers to validate the performance of Endurance across a wide range of delivery routes.

Is Sunswap Endurance powered solely by solar panels, or does it have other power sources?

While solar power is a key feature of Sunswap Endurance, it is not the sole power source. Endurance is primarily powered by its onboard batteries. The solar panels on the roof of the trailer provide supplementary charging to the batteries, extending the unit’s range and reducing the frequency of plug-in charging sessions.

Some routes can run entirely on solar energy, depending on the air temperature and solar availability. Overall, chilled and chilled-ambient deliveries run on 53% solar over the course of four seasons.

How long does Sunswap Endurance take to charge and how long can it run on a single charge?

When charging from 0-100%, with both standard and fast charging options available. Run times vary based on several factors, but Endurance can operate for 24+ hours for frozen goods and up to 2 months for chilled goods on a single charge in many cases.
