Sunswap started with a simple belief: we could build a better fridge. Not just a greener one - a better one. While the industry was stuck with diesel, we started from scratch. Today, from our UK manufacturing facility and growing European operations, we're proving that building electric from day one doesn't just eliminate emissions - it delivers superior performance that operators actually want.

Since we began our journey in 2020, Sunswap has rapidly evolved from an idea to a leading manufacturer of electric transport refrigeration.
January 2020
Sunswap is founded
Sunswap was started by Michael Lowe, Nikolai Tauber and Andrew Sucis with a clear mission to decarbonise the global cold chain through innovative engineering. Our founding team brought together a combined two decades of expertise from refrigeration, automotive engineering, and clean technology to develop a new approach to transport refrigeration.
February 2022
First customer trials
After intensive development with the first prototype, our first customer trials began with industry leaders including DFDS, GIST, and Tesco. These real-world tests validated Endurance's performance, with our units consistently demonstrating 100% uptime and the ability to operate entirely on solar power for extended periods in certain operations.
September 2022
First customer order
International logisitics firm DFDS places the first order of the Sunswap Endurance units after successful road trials.
January 2023
Leatherhead headquarters established
Sunswap established its headquarters in Leatherhead, Surrey, creating a central hub for our engineering, product development, aftermarket and commercial teams. This strategic location provided the foundation for our growth and access to talented individuals across the UK.
April 2024
Manufacturing begins
We reached a crucial milestone by beginning the manufacture of Sunswap Endurance at our Leatherhead facility, ensuring we could scale to meet customer demand.
August 2024
Series B investment secured
Funding led by BGF, with participation from Shell Ventures, Move Energy, and existing investors, Barclays and Clean Growth Fund. This investment helped to accelerate production capacity, technology development, and supporting expansion across the UK and Europe to meet growing customer demand.

November 2024
First commercial units delivered
DFDS took delivery of our first commercial Endurance units, marking the transition from trials to real-world operation. Five years of research and development had led to this: a proven zero-emission transport refrigeration unit ready for market.
April 2025
Fleet-wide deployments
Sunswap units entered operation across multiple major fleets including Birds Eye, Tesco, Staples Vegetables and Greenyard. These deployments demonstrated the scalability and ability to perform across diverse operations from logistics and retail.
November 2025
Sunswap enters France
Sunswap expands into France through a partnership with leading refrigerated trailer manufacturer Chereau. The partnership launched at Solutrans in Lyon and makes Endurance available to French fleet operators, extending Sunswap's European distribution network.
January to April 2026
International expansion accelerates
Sunswap expands across the Netherlands, Australia, Chile and Spain. Working with local partners, Sunswap brings Endurance to new operators, including Royal Euser in the Netherlands and Walmart Chile. From European winters to Australian summers, Endurance's battery and solar-powered refrigeration supports commercial fleets across different climates and operating conditions.
May 2026
New investment supports Australian expansion
Sunswap secures a commitment of up to AUD 10 million from Australia's Clean Energy Finance Corporation to support the deployment of more than 100 Endurance units across Australian retail and logistics fleets. The investment helps Sunswap scale its technology internationally and meet growing demand for electric transport refrigeration.

Sunday Times Best Places to Work: three years running
Sunswap is named one of The Sunday Times Best Places to Work for the third consecutive year, this time in the medium-sized organisation category. The award recognises the people and culture behind Sunswap's growth, and the company continues to build a supportive, collaborative and ambitious workplace as it expands.
July 2026
New Technology Centre opens in Leatherhead
Sunswap officially opens its new Technology Centre, welcoming customers, partners and industry leaders to an Open Day. Four times the size of its previous facility, the centre brings manufacturing, engineering, research and development, and customer support together under one roof. It scales UK production and supports Sunswap's continued international growth.

Double award win recognises commercial success
Sunswap wins two major TCS&D Awards, taking home Transport Refrigeration Manufacturer of the Year for the second time and the Partnership Award alongside Chiltern Distribution and TIP Group. Sunswap has moved from developing innovative technology to delivering proven electric transport refrigeration in everyday commercial operations.
