Ocado Selects Sunswap Zero-Emission Refrigeration for Double-Deck Trailer Fleet

Electric refrigeration units to support net-zero commitment

Sunswap, the British manufacturer of battery and solar-powered transport refrigeration, today announced that Sunswap Endurance units are operating in Ocado's double-deck trailer fleet.

The two Endurance units are powering Ocado’s flagship double-deck trailers. Ocado’s fresh and frozen goods will now be kept chilled by purpose-built electric refrigeration. Endurance eliminates diesel entirely, delivering true zero emissions alongside significant cost savings and high operational performance.

By eliminating diesel, each Endurance unit saves 20.5 tonnes of CO2 annually while reducing operating costs by up to 81% compared to traditional refrigeration units. The solar panels integrated into each trailer roof provide additional free energy to reduce grid charging requirements and extend range.

Endurance delivers up to 24 hours of frozen operation or two months of chilled operation on a single charge. This electric performance ensures reliable temperature control without the operational compromises often associated with sustainable technology.

The July 2025 deployment supports Ocado's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2040, with Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-validated goals including a 42% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030.
