From e-TRU to e-TRUCK: How Sunswap Endurance serves as the ideal stepping-stone to full-scale electrification.

For many in the logistics industry, refrigerated transport may not be the first thing that springs to mind when considering the electrification of transport.

Even at Sunswap – constantly immersed in all things refrigeration – we are aware that the largest share of the industry’s carbon emissions come from propelling goods along the road, rather than keeping them at temperature.

However, transitioning to e-trucks is also the largest share of the burden in terms of cost, upheaval and co-ordination. So with that in mind, how can starting with the transition to Sunswap’s technology help clear the pathway to electric trucks? We’ve outlined 4 ways that installing Endurance TRUs acts as a catalyst for further electrification, getting operators started on their decarbonisation journey.

💶 Freeing up budget 💶

The average overall saving with Sunswap is just over £25,000 per TRU during 10-years, based our sales and trial data. The capability to run on around 53% solar energy over the course of four seasons (for up to 85% of customers who run chilled delivery cycles) results in year-on-year financial savings. This counts for even more if you can generate electricity in downtime with your Endurance trailer, or with static solar panels on site. As diesel costs and energy costs are stripped away by our e-TRUs’ efficiency and onboard energy generation, the saving per unit per year frees up budget for electric trucks.

💪 Building organisational muscle-memory 💪

With every change in logistics between diesel and electric such as in refuelling and pre-journey checks, as well as new maintenance and repair skills, your team will have to adapt. Unlike high-voltage vehicles and fridges,  Endurance doesn’t require specialist training nor safety equipment as it’s a low-voltage system, which provides a safer and smoother way to adopt electrical assets into your fleet.

More generally, your team will be more likely to hit the ground running with electric trucks after working with Sunswap Endurance, through utilising charging bays instead of forecourts, and through gaining a sense of kilowatt hours and battery state of charge rather than litres of fuel.

🪶 Weight reduction 🪶

Should a new electric tractor unit put pressure on your maximum weight or decrease your maximum range, the Endurance transport fridge can take the edge off. That’s because our refrigeration system is lighter than its diesel counterparts in most configurations: While Endurance’s heaviest battery pack option weighs the same as its diesel equivalents with full fuel tanks – all tipping the scales at around 1 tonne – its smallest configuration is up to 205kg lighter than the equivalent diesel TRU configuration.

🔌 Infrastructure: A lower-stakes transition that buys you time 🔌

Our system constantly generates solar energy during daylight hours, which gives leeway to the adjustment of schedules and charging times. Onboard generation also softens the impact of variable mains-charging speeds and similar teething problems associated with the transition to electric.

Given that our system can run independently of charging via the solar array and state-of-the-art battery pack, charging outside of your depot isn’t necessary for most delivery cycles. In contrast, truck batteries will need refilling more often than Endurance’s battery pack. So with new charging stations being installed fairly gradually the UK and Europe, upgrading to e-reefers before upgrading to EV allows additional time for those charging points to punctuate the highways and motorways more regularly.

Large-scale electrification doesn’t happen overnight, but by starting with Sunswap Endurance, operators can help make a smooth transition to EV. To start a conversation around your refrigerated fleet upgrade, contact us.
